In line with its vision of empowering communities through education and service, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Lagos State Chapter has taken a bold step to revive the dwindling culture of reading among youths.
As part of its advocacy, Lagos FOMWAN has launched a reawakening reading culture initiative and is currently providing free tutorial classes for SSCE and UTME candidates. The program is hosted at the Open Library within Aguda Central Mosque, Soloki Street, Surulere, creating a safe and accessible space for students to learn, engage, and prepare for their future.
The tutorials are designed not only to boost academic performance but also to rekindle a passion for knowledge, discipline, and self-development among young learners. By offering this platform, FOMWAN Lagos is addressing one of the major gaps in education—accessibility—especially for students from underprivileged backgrounds who might not afford private tutoring.
Community members have lauded the initiative, noting that it is a timely intervention at a period when distractions from digital entertainment are threatening reading habits. For FOMWAN Lagos, this project is a practical demonstration of its commitment to community development, youth empowerment, and educational advancement in line with Islamic values.
Through this advocacy, FOMWAN Lagos continues to inspire a new generation, proving once again that when women lead with purpose, entire communities thrive.
